A Kick or a Hand?

car in sinkholeIra Young was leaving his home in suburban Atlanta on his way to work. Now, I’m not sure what he was doing that caused him to miss the upcoming hazard, but he drove his car into a large sinkhole that formed in one of the residential roads. Emergency workers roped off the area and had to leave the car overnight because they were unsure if the ground around the hole would support a crane to lift the car out. The next morning, Ira came back to meet the emergency workers and found his car had been badly vandalized. Much of the remaining glass in the car had been shattered out, the car seats were ripped up, and his stereo was stolen.

Jesus and Tim Tebow’s Narrow Religion

As a sports fan I love football season. I enjoy watching good games with my wife who sometimes will even watch more than I do. It is a great time of year! Even if you do not watch much football you may of hear of the name Tim Tebow. Tebow is the quarterback for the Florida Gators football team. His team has won the national championship twice and Tebow has also won the Heisman trophy for his performance at quarterback. Tebow is a fiery competitor and a natural born leader. What troubles some is that Tebow is an outspoken professing born again believer in Jesus Christ. He takes mission trips in the summer with his father Bob Tebow to the Philippines. The problem many see with Tebow is that he brings his faith onto the football field, often painting a scripture reference under his eyes in eye paint.

America: One Nation Under Whatever

I was reading a recent issue of Newsweek at the dentist’s office (mainly because I ain’t gonna pay for it). One of the articles said that America is a Hindu nation. The author’s argument wasn’t that we worship Hindu gods, but that as a nation we follow the Hindu code that there are many ways to god (God?) and all ways are equal. The writer says that Christians learn in Sunday School that their religion is true and others are false because Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” American’s don’t seem to be buying it anymore. 65% of Americans in 2008 said that many religions can lead to eternal life. 37% of that number claimed to be born again Christians.

All that Matters is the Baby is Healthy

God has blessed my wife and I will two awesome boys. One is three almost four and the other is two years old. We are praying for a third child soon, maybe within a year or so. Both times Sandra was pregnant I dreaded many conversations I would have with people. Many of the conversations would go like this, “Are you hoping for a girl or boy?” My response, “Whatever God gives us I will be happy.” Many people would then respond this way, “Well as long as the baby is healthy that is all that matters.” Now yes health is important and I do pray for healthy children and I know the person who I was speaking with desires the child be healthy. But this type of comment often left me very troubled.

We Need A Passion For Prayer

“Hey guys, could you please pray for my cat? Yeah, I know it’s silly. She just got spayed and she’s just purely miserable. She can’t walk and she keeps falling off stuff when she tries.” This isn’t a prayer request from a child, but one that I found on a Christian prayer board. I’m not really talking here about whether we should pray for animals, but I’m talking about the trivial prayers that we sometimes offer and ask.

Wailing Wall, Prayers and Twitter

For years many people have placing their prayer request through the cracks in the “Wailing Wall” in Jerusalem. This wall is located in East Jerusalem and is believed to be Western Wall of the Second Temple. For many devout Jews this is an important place to come and pray. They believe the presence of God has never left this wall. In 2009, Alon Nil launched a free service allowing people around the world to send their prayer request in using Twitter. Once the requests are received they are printed and taken to the wall. This caught on and now Alon needs many people to help him take all the prayer requests in for him.

Jesus Shows Up In Some Weird Places

Oliver was just minding his own business, making a hamburger, when Jesus showed up. As he looked down into the pan with brown fat on the bottom, he saw an image that appeared to be the face of Jesus. So he took a picture and made the news. In 2006, an unmarried couple saw the face of Jesus in the ultrasound of their baby, declaring in their mind that the Son of God approved of their situation.

Christmas in August

Why are we celebrating Christmas in August? It is not because we have the months mixed up but it is because there is still a great need for the gospel of Jesus Christ to reach the nations. As a Southern Baptist Church we support the International Mission Board, which does a fantastic job sending out missionaries.
