The Economy and the Bible
If I hear the word “bailout” one more time or AIG and bonuses I might just throw the remote through the TV. That of course would be bad because that would mean no more Blue Clues for my sons for a while (but my sanity would be restored from Blues Clues overload). Certainly many are still on edge wondering when and if we will ever get out of this economic slump. We ceratinly do not know what tomorrow holds.
Miraculous Transformations
I have been following a segment on the Today show for a while about people that lost over 100 lbs simply through diet and exercise. Their stories of transformation are both amazing and inspirational, and you feel good for people who identified a problem in their life and worked to be different. A few years ago we were worried about the size 0’s in Hollywood who portrayed a body image that was hardly attainable. Now we seem to have moved more towards health than Hollywood. Whether it’s episodes of the Biggest Loser, new workout routines, or a better diet, there are constant reminders out there that if you’re overweight and unhappy, you don’t have to stay that way.
Lost
I am sure you have heard the news about the four men who capsized their boat off the Gulf of Mexico this past weekend. Sadly so far only one survivor has been found and the Coast Guard has called off the search for the other three men. As I heard the news I began to think about how frightening it would be to be lost at sea. I could not imagine being out in the middle of the ocean with no one to talk to, yelling out for help and getting no response. Simply put it would be lonely being lost. This leads me to my focus this morning, thinking about all those in our area who need to know Christ, those who are lost!
Is Communism the Real Picture of Christianity?
Venezuela recently passed a law that allows their President, Hugo Chavez, to run for office as many times as he would like. As a result, Chavez says that the nation is stating their support for his Socialist ideas and the redistribution of oil wealth throughout the country, even to people that aren’t involved in the industry. As things grow worse in our own nation, built on Capitalism and hard work, the conversations regarding the merits of Socialism are too much for me. Some believe you can have Socialism (economic control by the government) without Communism (social control by the government), but that is a dangerous line to walk.
Good News in a Bad News World
Let’s see if I can remember them all: acid rain, depletion of the rain forests, the oceans dying, asteroids hitting the earth, and global warming. These are all the ways that we were told we were going to die when I was growing up. Each one of these was a catastrophe waiting to happen and that couldn’t be avoided. And yet, I’m still here. Is it my natural resiliency that has allowed me to survive so long? Or is it that we live in a world that dwells on the negative?
Your Faith and UFO’s: What Will Come to Light?
David Cameron a British politican has promised that if elected Prime Minister, he would open all the secret British files that contain information about UFO’s. When Jesus Christ comes back one day what will life reveal about what you believe about Him? Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4:5, “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.”
Presidential Prayer: A meaningful moment or worthless words
As we come upon a new presidency in our country, it’s disturbing that one of the hot issues of the inauguration on January 20th is an issue of prayer. Many people were outraged when Barack Obama made the decision to have Rick Warren pray. Newsweek asks “To Whose God Will Rick Warren Pray?” They cite the inclusive language of President Bush’s 2005 inauguration. The minister closed his prayer, “We ask in your most holy name.” That was considered OK. But in 2001, Franklin Graham closed his inaugural prayer with, “In the name of the Father, and of the son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.” Alan Dershowitz wrote in the L.A. Times that Graham’s prayer “excluded tens of millions of American Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Shintoists, Unitarians, Agnostics, and Atheists from his blessing.”
Questioning God during tragedy
With the recent tragic death of John Travolta’s son Jett, I began to wonder is it really okay to question God during a tragedy? After all Jett was 16, why would God allow someone that young to die? Why does God allow bad things to happen in life?
The link between America and Israel: Why you should care
America is a friend to Israel. It seems only fitting that two nations that have such strong ties to the God of the Bible would have strong ties to one another. But America has done Israel few favors over the years under our Middle East Peace Plans. From Carter to Clinton the plan has been, “Hey Israel, why don’t you give these Palestinians a little more of your land? That will make them happy.” But it never did. And when the fighting would start again, it was always Israel called on to make concessions.
Learning to connect your faith and your everyday life
Are there situations in life when you can stop thinking and acting like a Christian? Does God really expect me to do everything for His glory? Connecting Point is a blog that is designed to show you how to live your faith out through your life. Being a Christian means learning how to look at the world through a biblical worldview. Now what is a worldview? A worldview is simply defined as how you look at the world.
