Have All Casualties Been Accounted For?
A headline recently caught my eye from Newsweek: “Abortion War Casualty”. It discussed the outrageous and terrible death of Dr. George Tiller who was murdered in his church. Having lived near Kansas, I knew of Dr. Tiller’s late-term abortion clinic as well as his weekly attendance in church. When the Bible says “Do not murder” in Exodus 20:13, the command is for both sides. The murder of unborn babies in our country is a blight, but so is the murder of a doctor who is performing a legal act.
The Newsweek story discussed Dr. Tiller as well as another abortion doctor who was murdered in 1998. However, nowhere in the story were the other casualties mentioned. What about the nearly 50 million children that have been murdered since 1973? What about the mothers who were told this would make their lives easier to live, who only found pain, guilt, and depression? In 2005 a 13 year study concluded in Finland. It found that women who had an abortion were six times more likely to commit suicide than those women who had a child or miscarried.
I fear that abortion is nothing more than a campaign issue anymore. We ask if someone is pro-life or pro-choice, but then after the campaign is over, things simply continue on as before. How long can our nation continue to trample the innocent, one of God’s favorite causes, and expect to see no repercussions? Proverbs 6:17 says that “…hands that shed innocent blood” are an abomination to God. Will we speak up for all the casualties? Will we continue to fight abortion in the political arena, or simply resign ourselves to the current situation?
